ST. COLMCILLE’S COMMUNITY SCHOOL
NEWS
November Remembrance Service
The November Remembrance Service took place on Tuesday 28th November.
It was a special time to gather in community to honour our
beloved dead who are not famed in story and legend, in song
and scripture. You might say, it was an occasion for honouring
the “little people”, the “ordinary people”,
of Earth’s past. It was a time for remembering with respect
and affection all those people, now dead, whose lives are intertwined
with ours in ways both known and unknown. Everyone was reminded
by Ms. Loughman that death is a natural part of living. That
it approaches us from every side, sometimes when least expected.
It is the rule of nature that all shall die sometime – soon
or late. The message is that this experience and this knowledge
are a part of human living and should not be hidden or denied!
The beautiful music, the readings and reflections so well delivered
by all who participated and the reverence of all present certainly
made it an experience that will continue to warm the hearts
of all who have lost a dear one for some time to come.
The School Musical – Calamity
Jane
Our school musical ‘Calamity Jane’ was a tremendous
success. During rehearsals and practice the school was filled
with music, colour, song and dance. Our musical, now an important
highlight of the school year, has awakened so much hidden talent
not only amongst the student body but amongst the staff too!
We wish to thank all those who have dedicated so much of their
time putting the whole experience together.
To our Students. . . .
Welcome to the new students who have joined us over the past
month. We do hope you have settled in well. A word of ‘Good
Luck’ to Siobhan Devlin who will represent St. Colmcille’s
Community School in the finals of the Irish Chemistry Olympiad
on the 6th of December 2003. Good luck also to those students
who will be participating in the Esat-BT Young Scientists in
January 2004 and to all students who will be participating
in various competitions over the coming months.
Transition Year Work Experience Week
Our Transition Year students have just completed a highly successful
week in the world of work. Our students went on placement in
many different areas of work. Work experience is a vital part
of the TY programme as it is intended that the Transition Year
should create opportunities to vary the learning environment
and to dispel the notion that learning is something that happens
only, or even most effectively, within the classroom. One of
the ways of doing this, and of providing an orientation towards
the world of work, is to include a component of actual work
experience. Our first of three such weeks took place from the
17th to the 21st of November 2003 and reports from both employers
and employees proved very positive indeed. Our thanks to all
who provided a placement to our TY students.
New School Website
Our new school website is nearing completion. It is hoped that
the site will offer a new way for all to interact with life
as it occurs in St. Colmcille’s. There will be a section
for students and a section for parents as well as usual sections
that will keep you up-to-date with the school calendar and
report on the different sports activities and the results of
same. You may sneak a preview of what is to come by logging
on to http://www.knocklyoncs.ie. Comments and ideas welcome
to fergal.oneill@knocklyoncs.ie.
